Bromley Heath United Under 9s v. Stoke Lane Under 9s

September 18th 2011

Bromley Heath 2-1 Stoke Lane

Bromley Heath United started their first Hanham minor league match well but were then left hanging on as Stoke Lane finished strongly.

On a heavy pitch at Pomphrey hill, both sides were straight out of the blocks and Baz Miller in goal had to be quick off his line to foil an early attack. At the other end, Luke Gill was put through and drew a good save from the Stoke Lane keeper. In the 6th minute, Luke executed a great sliding tackle and the ball broke for Ole Bainbridge who, once more, finished smartly. After 10 minutes it was 2-0, Sam Wallage slipped a through ball to Luke who passed it round the defender and calmly sidefooted in to the net. Bromley Heath then forced a series of corners and generally looked to have the game well under control. After the break, however, it was a different story, with Stoke Lane camped in the Bromley Heath half. They found Baz in top form, commanding his area and showing safe handling. The home team’s midfield was not always getting back quick enough to support the defence and Charlie Watts did well to slow down a number of attacks as well as putting in some good tackles. Cameron Hopkins also attended to his defensive duties diligently, covering most of the pitch. Final score 2-0.

Game 2 started as the first had ended with Stoke Lane on the attack. Despite this territorial advantage, Jamie Taylor, Oliver Harper and Aaron Flynn ensured that the keeper was rarely tested. Again the energy levels in midfield were low and Bromley Heath were grateful to Tom Walker for a great all round performance, tackling well in defence and also joining the rare attacks. Joel Britton worked tirelessly up front but too often found himself outnumbered. Eventually the inevitable happened and  Stoke Lane worked their striker in for a well taken goal. It was now 2-1 overall with 5 minutes left. The time seemed to go by very slowly but Bromley Heath just held on.

So it was 3 points and a winning start in the Hanham minor league. However, Stoke Lane will probably feel they should have at least shared the points. Their failure to score in game 1 was in no small part due to a welcome return to form from Baz Miller in goal  - a deserved man of the match. In game 2, Tom Walker gave a great demonstration of central midfield play, working hard and linking defence and attack to earn the man of the match award. The team play and support of the man on the ball will need to come up a notch if Bromley Heath are to progress in the cup next week against TC Juniors.

Bromley Heath United Under 9s v. TC Juniors Under 9s

September 25th 2011

Bromley Heath 3-1 TC Juniors

For the second successive week, Bromley Heath secured a hard earned victory and were once more indebted to their defence and goalkeeper as they progressed to the next round of the cup.

Intermittent drizzly rain and a heavy pitch made playing good football difficult but both sides put on a great contest. Bromley Heath started well and were one up after a minute. Callum Bailey was fouled on the right wing, jumped up to take the free kick and found Luke Gill in space on the edge of the box. Luke calmly chipped the keeper to maintain his record of scoring in every game this season. For virtually the rest of the match, Bromley Heath were on the back foot and showed great resilience in keeping the speedy and skilful TC attackers at bay. Baz Miller continued his good form of last week and made save after save, displaying commendable safe handling in the wet conditions. The defence was kept busy and Charlie Watts and Harry Richardson made a number of clean tackles and interceptions. The midfield also got back well with Tom Walker, Callum and Isaac Spencer all taking up excellent covering positions. With under 10 minutes to go, TC equalised with a tap in from a corner. If anything they then redoubled their efforts to score the winner, but the defence held out for a 1-1 final scoreline.

Game 2 also started well when Joel Britton was put through on the right. Although his shot lacked power, it had the virtue of being on target and found its way in to the net. Bromley Heath managed to put together a few threatening moves but found the TC keeper in good form. When ever TC threatened, Aaron Flynn was on hand to tidy up and it was his run from defence that settled the match in the second half. Spotting a gap down the right wing Aaron accelerated up past half way, slipped a pass to Sam Wallage who played the ball in to Kieran McDonagh-Langley who calmly netted for a great team goal. Bromley Heath spurned some more good chances to score but were happy to settle for 2-0 and a 3-1 aggregate victory.

The Under 9s are proving a difficult team to beat and only Baz’s excellence in goal prevented defeat in game 1. However, many other attacks were cut off further up the pitch and the main reason for this was the huge workrate and tackling of Harry Richardson who deservedly took man of the match. In game 2 the award went to another defender who always seems to be around to snuff out danger. Aaron capped an excellent defensive performance by creating the decisive goal with a great run from the back. Bromley Heath will now host Stoke Lane in the next round of the cup.

Bromley Heath United Under 9s v. Stoke Lane Under 9s

October 9th 2011

Bromley Heath 5-3 Stoke Lane

Bromley Heath reached the semi finals of the cup (where they will play Downend Saints) with this win but were again made to work hard by their opponents.

The first game was a real topsy-turvy affair with Bromley Heath twice taking the lead and then being pegged back. Encouragingly, the home team once again started well and forced a succession of corners. From the fourth corner, Luke Gill put the ball right in the danger area and panicked a defender in to hand balling in to his own net. Shortly after, Luke maintained his record of scoring in every game this season when he controlled a poor clearance and chipped the ball over the keeper from 20 yards out.  It was then all Bromley Heath and Luke narrowly missed when through on the goalkeeper. After half time, the attacking momentum continued with Ole Bainbridge putting a shot just over the bar following a great run and cross from Callum Bailey. Ole then narrowly missed with a stooping header following a Luke corner. The game appeared to be in control but then a reckless tackle just outside the box gave Stoke Lane an opportunity which they took emphatically, slamming the free kick in to the roof of the net. Luke then nearly played Callum in but concentration wavered at the other end. An innocuous cross from the left wing resulted in a complete breakdown in communication between goalkeeper and defender and an own goal levelled the scores. Harry Richardson, meanwhile, was looking threatening in attack, having put in one good cross, he then found space in the box to receive a good pass from Sam Wallage and swept the ball home. That should have been that, but another free kick conceded in a dangerous area led to the ball striking the bar and then bobbling about in the area – Stoke Lane’s striker was first to react to level the match at 3-3.

Team 2 were a lot more solid as a unit and created a number of chances. Cameron Hopkins shot straight at the keeper when well placed, Kieran McDonagh-Langley hit the cross bar direct from a corner and a Joel Britton shot went just wide following a good through ball from Tom Walker. Towards the end of the first half, Joel got a deserved goal following a good cross from the left by Kieran. Stoke Lane got forward more after half time but the reassuring figure of Aaron Flynn always seemed to appear whenever danger threatened. Jamie Taylor was also frequently on hand to usher the forwards away from goal. With Thomas Gibbs, Ellis Cox and Lewis Tozer all putting in good shifts in midfield, Bromley Heath then sealed the game when Joel was quickest to a loose ball in the area and made it 2-0 from close range.

Bromley Heath therefore advance in the cup but there are still plenty of things to work upon, notably avoiding conceding free kicks in dangerous areas and better communication between defenders and keeper. In game 1, Luke Gill took man of the match having been in contention in all previous matches this season. He continues to be a complete nuisance to opposition defenders and often manufactures chances despite being outnumbered. Another attacker, Joel Britton, was man of the match in game 2, not just for the two goals but for his all round effort which saw him cover every inch of grass.

Bromley Heath United Under 9s v. Ashton boys Under 9s

October 23rd 2011

Bromley Heath 6-2 Ashton boys

The Under 9s put in their best performance of the season, with all the players on top form, to register a 6-2 home victory.

Game 1 started at high tempo with Bromley Heath doing most of the attacking. Callum Bailey was particularly prominent on the right wing and also sent over a number of good corners – unfortunately, no-one could quite get on the end of them. Callum then went close to scoring, putting a shot just over the bar following an excellent run and cross from Harrison Wood. After all that pressure it was frustrating to reach half time still goalless. The home team continued to apply pressure, with Oliver Kift getting forward to good effect, and when Ole Bainbridge put in a good tackle in midfield, the ball broke to Sam Wallage who beat his man and finished well with his unfavoured left foot. Enthusiasm then got the better of the team and with the defence over committed going forward, Ashton broke through and gave Isaac Spencer in goal no chance, levelling at 1-1. Thus encouraged, Ashton could easily have taken the lead but for timely interceptions from Charlie Watts and Harry Richardson. On the balance of play Bromley Heath deserved the win and Callum chose an excellent time to break his goal drought with an emphatic right foot finish to make the score 2-1.

If anything, game 2 saw an even better performance with the midfield of captain Lewis Tozer, Tom Walker and Thomas Gibbs quickly establishing supremacy. Tom looked particularly sharp and was rewarded with his first goal of the season when he calmly placed the ball in to the corner of the goal following a Kieran McDonagh-Langley lay off. Kieran then narrowly missed adding to the score following a determined run and cross from Baz Miller. Ashton had a number of good chances but found Aaron Flynn and particularly Jamie Taylor in good form at the back. However, their pressure told and just after half time, Ashton equalised following a risky pass across the penalty area. Bromley Heath redoubled their efforts and with keeper turned striker Baz leading the way, in the absence of the regular front men, the lead was retaken. Kieran again put in a beautiful cross from the left to leave Baz with a tap in. Kieran continued to dictate the game with some trademark dangerous corners and pinpoint crosses – from yet another of these, Oliver Harper was the recipient, well deserved after a hard working performance. Thomas had put in some bulldozing runs down the right and when he broke through two tackles and unleashed a fierce shot which hit the post, Baz was on hand, taking his time to calmly slot home. Ashton didn’t give up and keeper James Carrington did well to tip over a dangerous cross. The final word went to Baz who was cruelly denied a deserved hat trick when his fierce shot from distance rattled the crossbar.

So, the unbeaten run continues and a very satisfying effort against good opponents. With the whole squad doing well, choosing a man of the match was especially different but in game 1, Sam Wallage ran the midfield, tackling, prompting, winning headers and opening the scoring with a well taken goal. Game 2 was even more difficult but Kieran McDonagh-Langley really showed his class with some great crossing and a high work rate, not to mention 3 assists to just edge out Baz.

Downend Saints Under 9s v. Bromley Heath United Under 9s

October 30th 2011

Downend Saints 5-3 Bromley Heath

Playing their first away game of the season at St Augustine’s school, the Under 9s went down to their first defeat since January 30th at AEK Boco.

On a heavy pitch, the home team made the stronger start, showing good commitment and team play. They were duly rewarded when Bromley Heath lost possession in midfield and failed to get numbers back quickly enough – the ball bounced around the box before being converted for the opening goal. Both sided continued to fashion chances and both Luke Gill and Callum Bailey went close. However, the lessons had not been learnt and Saints found themselves with a 3 on 1 and again finished well.  Soon after it was 3, although the defence may have stood off a bit, there was no stopping a powerful finish. Sam Wallage broke through and drew a good save from the keeper and Oliver Kift just failed to net the rebound. The half time score of 3-0 then became worse when a defensive error led to a tap in. From that moment on, Bromley Heath bucked up their ideas and were quickly rewarded when Sam ran straight through the centre of the defence and blasted the ball high into the net. The defence looked more organised with Jamie Taylor reading the game well and Harry Richardson firm in the tackle. Isaac Spencer, meanwhile, was having an excellent match, one twinkle toed dribble drawing a round of applause from the spectators – he also tackled with authority. However, there was no way past the well-organised defence, despite a few more half chances and the final score was 4-1.

In game 2 the Bromley Heath defence showed much more cohesion against a dangerous attack, with Aaron Flynn quick to spot danger and Oliver Harper commitment personified. James Carrington also had a fine game, saving in a 1 on 1 situation and then keeping out a penalty which was struck right at him. At the other end, Cameron Hopkins got on the end of a Kieran McDonagh-Langley corner and sent the ball just wide as it remained goalless at half time. Saints scored soon after the resumption when a powerful cross cum shot from the right, found its way through defender’s legs and in to the net. Bromley Heath kept going with Tom Walker and Thomas Gibbs both working really hard in midfield. Kieran then broke down the right and with no options on put in a hopeful cross which found its way in to the net from an acute angle. Minutes later, another Kieran cross from the right this time found Tom who coolly helped the ball in to the net. A well deserved 2-1 victory was not enough to overturn the deficit from game 1 but spoke volumes for the character of the players.

So, a close game, whetting the appetite for the cup semi final between the two sides in 2 weeks time. Isaac Spencer took the man of the match in game 1 for a good all round performance and his ‘Maradona moment’. Any of team 2 would have been worthy contenders but Oliver Harper’s hard work and commitment saw him edge out the others

Bromley Heath United Under 9s v. Frampton Rangers Under 9s

November 6th 2011

Bromley Heath 4-2 Frampton Rangers

The Under 9s had to fight hard for this narrow victory and at one stage looked like they might lose before a big improvement towards the end of the game.

Team 1 dominated the first game having got off to an ideal start when, after 4 minutes, Luke Gill fed Sam Wallage who surged into the box, rounded the keeper and finished with his left foot.  Despite dominating the possession, there were then very few chances up to half time. After the break, Bromley Heath had many chances to put the game to bed with Callum Bailey and Harry Richardson both setting up Ole Bainbridge who shot narrowly wide on both occasions. Ole continued to take up good positions and was again just wide when through on goal. Eventually the second came when Luke picked up a poor clearance, advanced on goal and chipped the keeper. There was still time for Luke to go narrowly wide with a volley from a Callum corner but overall the team had to be disappointed with just the 2 goals. Keeper Isaac Spencer and defenders Harry, Charlie Watts and Harrison Wood had little to do. Oliver Kift, Luke and Ole all looked threatening at times up front but the final touch just wasn’t there.

After their excellent performance last week, team 2 started very sluggishly and half way though the first half Frampton had levelled the tie. For the first goal, the away side surged forward evading tackles for a comfortable finish. The second goal was even more infuriating as the big forward just wandered to the edge of the box and slotted the ball home without a defender anywhere near him. The introduction of Kieran McDonagh-Langley helped galvanise the team and the chances came. Tom Walker was prominent in midfield and Ellis Cox put in some effective tackles. Joel Britton, having taken on some speculative long shots, this time chose the right option and fed in Kieran who calmly sidefooted home. It was 1-2 at half time and only one goal in the tie. Kieran continued to take threatening corners, hitting the bar from one, drawing a good save from the keeper and setting up Thomas Gibbs whose effort flew just over the bar. Thomas then executed a perfect tackle in midfield from which the ball broke to Joel who outpaced the defence and finished calmly. Frampton still believed they could get something out of the game but the home defence was a lot less accommodating, Aaron Flynn and Oliver Harper both finishing the game strongly. In goal, James Carrington comfortably caught two goalbound shots. From another break both Thomas and Lewis Tozer went close in a goalmouth melee.

A patchy performance but enough to take the points. The team work will have to move up several notches if Bromley Heath are to overcome Downend Saints in next week’s cup semi. Ole Bainbridge took the man of the match in game 1 for his excellent positioning – he only needs to recalibrate his gunsights and the goals will fly in. Kieran McDonagh-Langley took the award for the second match for a good all-round game, getting about the park and making a number of excellent tackles to compliment the corners and the goal.

Downend Saints Under 9s v. Bromley Heath United Under 9s

November 13th 2011

Downend Saints 5-2 Bromley Heath

Bromley Heath lost away to Downend Saints for the second time in 3 weeks, this time it was in the cup semi final. To a man, the away side gave their all but a couple of silly mistakes, some indifferent finishing and an inspired home keeper meant that it was not to be.

After the poor start 2 weeks ago, the coaches emphasised the importance of concentration from the kick off but sadly this advice was not followed and after 30 seconds the ball fell to an unmarked Saints player who simply had to stroke the ball home. From then on it was all Bromley Heath who launched wave after wave of attacks. Sam Wallage hit the post following a fine run down the right, Callum Bailey drew a good save from the keeper who then also dived bravely at the feet of Ole Bainbridge when he was through on goal. The home keeper was on top form yet again when foiling a Luke Gill shot – throughout the game he not only saved everything but held on to it as well.  It was therefore particularly galling to go 2-0 down just before half time when Saints were again quickest to the ball following a corner and the ball was poked in from close range. In fairness it could have been 3-0 soon after but in the absence of goal line technology the referee gave the benefit of the doubt to keeper Baz Miller. Saints came in to the game more in the second half and on more than one occasion Bromley Heath had Harrison Wood to thank for some excellent covering tackles – he also went forward to good effect. Luke drew yet another good save before Baz did well to save a near post shot but he could do nothing about a powerful left foot drive that flew in to the corner of the net for 3-0. The scoreline seemed most unfair on the balance of play and eventually Bromley Heath found a way past the home keeper. Charlie Watts played a superb ball out of defence to the feet of Callum who controlled it well, turned and placed the ball under the keeper. Final score 3-1.

A two goal deficit did not seem an insurmountable hurdle but again Bromley Heath were architects of their own misfortune. There was no communication between defender and keeper and an innocuous cross from the left trickled in to the net. There were few chances at either end with defensive trio of Aaron Flynn, Oliver Harper and Jamie Taylor looking comfortable. However, disaster struck again when a roll out from the keeper was intercepted by an alert Saints striker who was left with an easy finish for 2-0. The introduction of Cameron Hopkins and Thomas Gibbs injected some energy in to the team and when Cameron was pushed over in the box, Joel Britton stepped up to drill the penalty home. So, at half time, Bromley Heath knew they had to score 3 times to force penalties. With Kieran McDonagh-Langley again whipping in some great corners and a free kick which went close and Joel tireless in attack, Bromley heath gave it their best shot. Tom Walker was excellent in midfield, shielding the defence from threatening attacks and showing great skill going forward. When Saints did break through they found James Carrington in good form, making a number of clean catches.

So, no cup final this season but the boys can be proud of their performance. It is the little things that win football matches and Saints were just that little bit quicker of thought at crucial moments, showing why they are unbeaten this season. Harrison Wood took to his new holding role with gusto, winning numerous tackles and getting up to support the attack to win man of the match in game 1. Tom Walker, fresh from his birthday celebrations, tackled well and looked comfortable on the ball throughout to win game 2’s award.
